He was popular and successful in his own day, publishing over 1,200 piano compositions. An interesting fact: Streabbog was born Jean-Louis Gobbaerts, but used pseudonyms ‘Streabbog’ (Gobbaerts reversed), ‘Ludovic,’ and ‘Lévi’ (we’re not entirely sure why!). This character piece is pure delight; there’s little doubt that it conjurs up the sounds and the mood of a crazy whirlwind!
Playing tips: It’s apparent from the start that this is the perfect piece for practising chromatic scales in both hands. These chromatic passages should be well-phrased, complete with crescendos. For full drama, make the most of the driving fortissimo ending. Pedalling is not required.
