Tickets still available to hear Australian pianist David Helfgott next month

DAVID HELFGOTT IN CONCERT

The Australian pianist returns to the UK for the first time in over 20 years to give concerts in Manchester (Bridgewater Hall, 27 May) and London (Barbican, 29 May). Helfgott’s life-story – teenage piano prodigy, wilderness years afflicted by mental illness and a triumphant return to music – was immortalized in the film Shine, where he was played by Geoffrey Rush in an Oscar-winning performance. In 2015 he starred in a filmed documentary about his life, ‘Hello, I Am David!’ written and produced by Cosima Lange

When Shine was released in 1996, Helfgott toured the world with his signature piece, Rachmaninov’s Third Concerto. This is the work featured in the second half of the concerts in May, in the composer’s own arrangement for two pianos. Helfgott will be joined by Rhodri Clarke, and in the first half will play a selection of Chopin and Liszt, including Ballades and Jeux d’eau a la Villa d’Este.
