One of the most anticipated music events in the world, the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition, has officially kicked off today in Moscow and St Petersburg. The competition will run until 29 June. 

231 contestants have been selected to compete from a record-breaking pool of 954 applicants. Of those, 25 pianists will be competing, with Russia, USA, Italy, France, China, Ukraine, Canada, Republic of Korea, UK, Japan, Spain, and Kazakhstan all being represented.

All contestants will today be competing in the first round of heats. You can watch the first round of pianists LIVE from 1pm.

The winner of the piano category is set to receive USD $30,000 along with a host of performance opportunities around the world, including appearances at the 74th International Duszniki Chopin Piano Festival (August 9 2019), and the MPHIL 360 Festival in Munich (January 31 - February 2 2020). A Grand Prix of USD $100,000 is also available to the musician who finishes above all other category winners.

The entirety of the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition will be streamed live via Medici TV.
