First built in 104, Steinway & Sons' Model K celebrates its 120th anniversary

This popular model, a staple in Steinway’s collection, continues to embody the company's legacy of craftsmanship, offering pianists an instrument that delivers that unique Steinway sound along with a balanced touch.

A benchmark in upright pianos

First built in 1904, the Steinway Model K is designed to set an unmatched standard in upright pianos. It combines a broad sound spectrum with a rich volume that provides an uncompromising musical experience. Described as "the upright of uprights" Guido Zimmermann, President of Steinway & Sons Europe, comments: “Our upright pianos match the magnificence of our grands in every way, except these pianos are built with a vertical orientation and are hence more space efficient. You can expect only the highest quality of materials, techniques, conditioning and processes, producing the finest upright pianos crafted by the most talented craftsmen. The Model K takes advantage of our patented Steinway & Sons features.”

About the Dolce Pedal

With the invention of the Dolce Pedal in 2020, Steinway has presented another innovation, enhancing the playing experience and expanding the possibilities of tonal expression. This technology is meant to enable more precise articulation, faster repetition, and a seamless transition from forte to piano, unlocking new realms of musical exploration.

A great choice for smaller spaces

For those living in smaller townhouses or urban environments, the Steinway Model K should be a wonderful choice. Despite its compact design, this upright piano delivers the full Steinway sound and quality, making it an excellent option for spaces where a grand piano might not be feasible. Its powerful sound and elegant craftsmanship bring the rich, resonant tones of a Steinway grand to any setting, ensuring that musicians in smaller homes can still experience the unmistakable sound of a Steinway piano.

Steinway pianos in music history

Throughout history, Steinway upright pianos have played a pivotal role in the creation of some of the world’s most beloved music, offering artists an unparalleled connection to their piano by placing them physically closer to the instrument. One of the most famous examples is John Lennon's timeless anthem, "Imagine," which was composed on a Steinway upright piano. From classical compositions to contemporary hits, Steinway pianos have been the instrument of choice for countless artists, serving as a trusted companion in the creative process. The enduring legacy of these pianos continues to inspire musicians across all genres.
