Two rare appearances at the Barbican, London and Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. Don't miss out!
DAVID HELFGOTT IN CONCERT
With associate pianist RHODRI CLARKE
The legendary classical Australian pianist, David Helfgott, who hasn’t performed in the UK for over 20 years, comes to the UK for two rare appearances – the first on 27 May at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, and the second on 29 May at London’s Barbican Hall.
This long-awaited return to the UK stage will see Helfgott perform solo works by Chopin and Liszt in the first half of the concert and Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto in its version for two pianos – with Rhodri Clarke – in the second half.
Who can’t forget this amazing scene from the 1996 movie?
David Helfgott is truly a living legend; at an early age he demonstrated a rare musical gift which was halted in his teens when illness overtook his life for more than a decade. His life was immortalised in the Oscar winning film ‘Shine’ (1996) which was written and directed by Scott Hicks and featured a thrilling lead performance by the Australian film actor Geoffrey Rush who won the 1997 Academy Award for Best Actor:
Things turned around for David Helfgott in the 1980s when he met his wife Gillian and within a year he had made a triumphant return to the world of classical piano. Since then he has become one of the most successful pianists of his generation; he has performed to enormous acclaim in over 35 countries, continuing to tour as busily as ever, and in 2015 starred in a filmed documentary about his life, ‘Hello, I Am David!’ written and produced by Cosima Lange.
